New Post-Study Work Visa Options in New Zealand: A Guide for International Students

If you’re planning to study in New Zealand, understanding the latest post-study work visa updates is crucial. New Zealand is making it easier for international graduates to gain work experience and transition into careers in their field. At GRI Education, we help students navigate these pathways, ensuring they maximize opportunities while studying and working in New Zealand.

Introducing the Short Term Graduate Work Visa

From late 2026, eligible international graduates will be able to apply for the Short Term Graduate Work Visa. This visa provides up to 6 months of open work rights, giving graduates time to find a job and potentially transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Have at least NZD $5,000 to support themselves
  • Not have previously held a Short Term Graduate Work Visa or Post Study Work Visa
  • Written approval from the New Zealand Scholarship Programme, if applicable
  • A valid medical certificate and chest X-ray, depending on the length of stay
  • Completion of a qualification at NZQCF level 5 to 7 studied full-time in New Zealand

This visa is ideal for international students looking to gain work experience in New Zealand immediately after graduation.

Note: Short Term Graduate Work Visa holders must work under a contract and cannot run a business. They also cannot sponsor partners for work visas or children for dependent student visas.

Extended Post Study Work Visa Eligibility

In addition, New Zealand will extend eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa. From late 2026, graduates who complete a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF level 7 will qualify, provided they:

  • Studied full-time in New Zealand for the entire duration
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree completed in New Zealand or overseas

This visa allows graduates to stay and work in New Zealand for up to 1 year, supporting partners and dependent children under certain conditions.

Why These Updates Are Important for International Students

These visa changes are designed to:

  • Attract skilled international graduates to New Zealand
  • Ensure graduates can transition from study to work in high-demand sectors
  • Maintain New Zealand’s reputation for high-quality education

For international students, this means better opportunities to work after studying in New Zealand, gain valuable experience, and explore long-term career pathways.
